It's amazing what people will do to get drugs, who they will hurt and how far they'll go to get their next fix. Only a few scenes of basketball are shown and the rest is pure drama. If you don't like sports movies or think it's all about basketball, it's not. Jim (Leo) had a passion for basketball, he joined a school team and even played it in his spare time with his friends, until one dose of heroin took over his life living on the streets of New York. It's a very realistic look at what drug addiction can do to a person, it completely changes who you are. Show moreĪmazing film! First saw it when I was 12, loved it at first sight. Also, the presence of DiCaprio and Wahlberg make this film one likely to pique the interest of teens. The total effect of the film is shown to be the source of the real life Carroll's later success. One such drug-induced dream has the trenchcoat-clad protagonist shooting his classmates –- a scene much discussed in the wake of Columbine. While there are ultimately consequences for these behaviors, scenes depicting the highs of cocaine and heroin use do convey a sense of elation and excitement. Men routinely offer money to Carroll for sex, including his coach. Obscene language is the norm rather than the exception as are scenes of violence, including muggings and robberies perpetrated by the main characters. Early in the film, the friends are deeply affected by the untimely death (due to leukemia) of their pal Bobby.
Parents need to know that this story is a gritty look a group of teenage friends as they succumb to drug addiction, and as such is probably only appropriate for the most emotionally mature teenagers.
